Daisy van Egmond (who often goes by Daisy Christina or Curvy Daisy) is known among fans for her long-term gaining consistency with regards to her size, and staying true to her narrative around “fat liberation.”

She has been a professional plus-size model for over 15 years, moving from the Netherlands to New York as her career, and her body, expanded.

Daisy’s Journey

Van Egmond began her modeling journey at the age of 17 in her homeland of the Netherlands, way back in 2012.

After gaining traction on social media, she moved to New York City in 2019. As well as modeling frequently for brands like Fashion Nova Curve, her work in what we’d call “size activism” has earned her respect throughout the plus size and gaining communities.

Fat and Beautiful”: Moving Beyond Euphemisms

How does she do this? Mostly through language. Daisy is distinct in her preference for the word “fat” over softer terms.

  • Reclaiming “Fat”: Her perspective is that “fat” is a neutral descriptor rather than an insult. I wrote about reclaiming my fatness here.
  • Challenging the “Before and After”: Daisy takes the stance that bodies aren’t “before” photos waiting to become “after” photos. They should be celebrated as they are.
  • The “Health Concern” Myth: One of my favorite things about Daisy is how she speaks out about “medical gaslighting,” where she basically says we need to be treated as a whole person regardless of our arbitrary numbers like BMI or weight.

Daisy’s Four Prompts for Body Neutrality

Daisy is known for her work in helping bigger women feel more comfortable in their skin in unique ways.

She advocates for using these specific prompts to help center the mind when body image feels overwhelming:

  1. “What has my body done for me today that has nothing to do with its appearance?” (Daisy is famous for shifting the focus on functionality, like breathing, walking, or hugging a loved one.)
  2. “If my self-worth had absolutely zero connection to my size, what would I be doing right now?” (Daisy helps identify activities or hobbies the user might be avoiding due to body insecurity.)
  3. “What is a specific ‘body rule’ I am currently following, and where did it come from?” (Challenges internalized societal standards, like “I can’t wear bright colors” or “I must hide my arms.”)
  4. “How would I speak to a dear friend who was feeling this way about their body?” (Daisy invokes self-compassion by externalizing the negative self-talk.)

Understanding the Method

Daisy’s journaling method is built on the philosophy that your body is a personality-delivery system rather than an ornament. In practice, this means using writing to brain dump negative thoughts and then systematically replacing them with neutral, factual observations about what your body is capable of.

She emphasizes that you don’t necessarily have to love every inch of your skin to treat your body with respect and kindness; rather, the goal of these prompts is to reach a state of body neutrality where your weight no longer dictates your daily happiness or your right to take up space.

Notable Curvy Daisy Quotes

Curvy Daisy has become iconic for the court she holds with fat admirers and body positive individuals alike. Here are some of her most famous quotes:

“I can remind them that I am both ‘fat and beautiful.’ Fat is a very loaded term, and everyone gets to decide what words they want to use.”

“People feel like you should hide when you’re my size—, that you should be ashamed for existing… I actually glorify self love.”

“I’ve finally recognized my body for what it is: a personality delivery system, designed expressly to carry my character from place to place.”

Again, Daisy frequently uses the phrase “personality delivery system” which is such a fascinating way to view yourself, and shows why she’s as popular with women as she is with men.
